This year’s contestants on GBBO have already wowed us with their champagne and strawberry Eiffel Tower cake, tantalising tray bakes and chocolatey wagon wheels. GBBO could not be more quintessentially English, over the last 8 years we have watched as the show has grown in strength, from a BBC2 ‘novelty’ programme, an upgrade to BBC1 and now to Channel 4, with its slightly ‘quirkier’ feel.
Each year we see new contestants on The Great British Bake Off, even the presenters have changed over the years, however, one thing that remains consistent is the kitchen setting and those islands we all secretly covet, the real ‘showstopper’ of the series. The kitchen has been designed as a home-from-home experience for the bakers, albeit in a tent, during the insane British heatwave, in the middle of a field in Berkshire!
The actual space the contestants work in isn’t huge, which means the look isn’t difficult to recreate in most kitchens, regardless of the size you’re working with. Whilst an island may be difficult to install in a particularly compact kitchen, a row of painted, handmade cupboards, with chrome half-moon handles and a wooden style worktop would soon create the look and feel of the famous kitchen.
At Anglia Factors we can create the classic ‘Bake-Off’ look, with bespoke units, cupboards and islands. We can match the unique colour of the units with beautiful shades of pale green, blue and violet. The wooden worktops look beautiful and work well with the style of the cabinets, however, you may consider a Quartz or Granite worktop, which requires very little upkeep and is much harder wearing than traditional timber. We use beautiful Hafele handles and knobs for our cabinets, specially selected to cover a broad spectrum of kitchen styles.
The oven used by the contestants in the show is the NEFF N70 Built-In Oven. The unique function is the oven door, which slips neatly underneath the oven, known as the ‘Slide and Hide’ and is perfect for any kitchen, it is paired with the famous NEFF ‘proving drawer’ something we are all familiar with as the contestants patiently wait for their dough to rise. You can do much more with a proving drawer (essentially a warming drawer) than most people think. Use it as a slow cooker, cook the perfect meringue or heat up croissants on a lazy Sunday morning.
Designing a new kitchen is often about taking inspiration from other people’s ideas; a magazine, Pinterest, Houzz and occasionally…….even a TV programme. The design may become an eclectic mix of all those elements, but essentially, we design a kitchen that is unique to you and your family, which will reflect your tastes and personality, but will also stand the test of time.
